Hello! My name is Liz Rymarev and I graduated from the University of Georgia in May 2024 with a bachelor's in Journalism and a minor in anthropology. Most recently, I was the spring photo fellow for the Dallas Morning News and before that, I was the six-month photo intern with the Omaha-World Herald.
At UGA, I was the fall '23 and spring '24 editor in chief of The Red & Black, the independent student-run newspaper covering the UGA and Athens, Georgia community. I led a staff of over 40 students and oversaw all digital and print operations, and pushed for social justice-centered, investigative and visual stories. I was awarded the William H. Fields scholarship for my dedication to the newspaper and the community, as well as the Juanita Cousins Traughber Scholarship for diversity in journalism.
In summer of 2023, I interned at Atlanta Civic Circle through the Atlanta Press Club and focused on housing affordability and democracy issues in my reporting. I also studied abroad in Cuba in May 2023, expanding my cultural understanding of the world and perfecting my salsa dance.
I was a McGill fellow at UGA's Grady College and a Levin Leader. Through these programs, I received the Barry Hollander scholarship for my commitment to journalism ethics and standards.
I was born in the Atlanta suburbs and grew up in Cumming, Georgia as the daughter of immigrants - my father is from Russia and my mother is from Kazakhstan. As a queer woman, I value diversity and identity in my work and by picking up my camera and telling stories, I hope my images take me far and I can learn about experiences different from my own and share it with the world.
When I'm not taking photos, I love to thrift fun pieces for my closet, pretend I'm training for a marathon and try new recipes!
